Speech Therapy
Speech-language pathologists (SLP) have a central role in providing services and supports for families and their infants or toddlers with disabilities as members of the early intervention team. SLPs address delays and disabilities in communication, language, speech, emergent literacy, and feeding/swallowing.
Social Work
An Early Intervention social worker can provide emotional support for parents. A social worker is a person to talk to; someone who will listen and give parents an opportunity to talk about their feelings, challenges and life experiences. Supports can include emotional support, identifying and coordinating community resources, parent education, counseling

ABA Services
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a highly preferred method, by both service providers and caregivers, of intervention for children with a variety of disorders, particularly those who would benefit from a behavior modification program. Children with various developmental disorders may face challenges in their cognitive abilities, communication, social-emotional abilities, physical development and adaptive behavior. ABA is considered to be the most-widely utilized intervention for children who would benefit from a behavior modification program. ABA is particularly beneficial in improving intellectual, expressive-language, receptive- language, adaptive behavior, and socialization skills. We employ a systematic application of interventions to increase socially significant behaviors and reduce barrier behaviors that impede a child’s ability to learn.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today. Autism is considered to be a “developmental disorder” as it is usually diagnosed in the first two years of life.

O.W.L. Academy is a unique program which includes both center and home services. We strongly recommend that all children who receive services in the center also receive ABA services in the home. At O.W.L. Academy we mandate collaboration. Our home based ABA therapists train in the center so that home therapy can mirror what is being done at the center, to facilitate the most progress. O.W.L. Academy provides all the materials. Each child is provided with a binder to track and collect data, materials that were used in the center to be taken home (so that they can be used at home) as well as a tote bag to make for an easy carry of those items. This model provides the most up to date data tracking and collaboration in order to facilitate the most progress and carry over.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for infants and toddlers with special needs. Children with diagnosed conditions that lead to developmental delays (such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, etc.) are eligible for the EIP. Children with no diagnosis who have delays in development may be eligible for the EIP if their delays are serious enough. If you have concerns about your child’s development, you can call the Early Intervention Program in your area to refer your child (if you live in New York City call 311, in Nassau County call (516) 227-8661, and in Suffolk County call (631) 853-3100). Someone else can help you make the referral to the Early Intervention Program if you wish. If your child is found to be eligible for services by someone approved to perform this evaluation, you, your county’s staff representative, and other team members will make a plan to help your child – and your family. Early Intervention services in your IFSP authorized by your county are provided at no cost to you. Your county will arrange for the services to be provided and will choose the provider based on the needs of your child and family. Your child’s health insurance may be used to cover some of the costs. All other costs for EIP services are paid for by your county and New York State. Early intervention services are provided where it’s best for your child – in places such as your home, day care, or other community settings. The EIP covers the cost of early intervention services only. The EIP does not pay for the day care or other fees charged by community settings.
